Ann van Messel is a Body Arts and Science International (BASI) Comprehensively Certified Pilates Instructor. She is qualified to teach Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chairs, Barrels, Ped-a-Pul, Avalon, and auxiliary equipment. A life-long learner, Ann has taken (and continues to take) courses in Pathologies and Injuries and how to work with them in a pilates setting, Modified and Prenatal Pilates, Pilates for Men, Pilates for the Athlete as well as other workshops both specific to areas of the body (e.g. foot, core, shoulder) or conditions (e.g. osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, scoliosis).
As a child, I enjoyed the movements of gymnastics, dance, swimming and skiing. At age 12, I was diagnosed with scoliosis and put in a back brace; I’ve had my share of pain. Finding pilates in my 40‘s finally offered me a consistent way to get and keep myself out of pain while moving my body and having fun. Pilates’ scientific approach to identifying my body’s specific strengths and weaknesses allowed me a pathway to better pain management, while allowing me the confidence and strength to play.
My love for sport is strong. My bicycle was my car through my early 20‘s and periodically since. I’ve guided groups in Turkey and Israel in white water canoes and rafts, in climbing limestone walls and rappelling into deep desert canyons. Yoga has always been a passion, with a journey to South India experiencing life in an ashram as a highlight.
As a teacher I enjoy assisting clients in finding their unique strengths and weaknesses, growing confidence in their abilities so they too can get out and play.
